How to Design Information Architecture

Information architecture (IA) design in the UX process is similar to flowcharting. It involves adding shapes and connecting them in an organized manner to create a single document. The challenge lies in understanding how the app or website works from the user's perspective and organizing that information into a readable format.

Constructing IA involves two main requirements: creating a visual hierarchy to organize features, functions, and behavior, and designing a legend to display different types of features, interactions, and flows. While standard flowcharts have specific shape requirements (rectangles for processes, diamonds for decision points, etc.), following those conventions is not mandatory.
