Challenge and Solution

Due to demographic changes, the demand for ophthalmological services is increasing. The research conducted by the United Nations says that in 2050 more than 1 in 5 people in the world will be 60 years and older. Along with the aging population, the field of ophthalmology faces other challenges such as difficulties with the implementation of technologies facilitating healthcare delivery. Also, it is not uncommon to see that health professionals lack the time for valuable face-to-face interactions with patients.

Digital health technologies are not only a win for social distancing but also address a problem that existed before Covid-19, back when the issue was not the lack of patient visits but the overloading of health care institutions. In the UK, 98% of healthcare providers regularly scheduled extra clinics and longer hours outside their job plans to keep up.

To address those challenges, Oculocare medical developed the Alleye platform. It consists of two components: a mobile app for patients and a web application for healthcare professionals. The Alleye app allows patients to detect and monitor retinal diseases. Healthcare professionals can access their patient’s results via alleye.io, a modern web application delivering complete security and compliance, including EU GDPR and HIPAA.

Delivered Value

Working in close collaboration with designers at Oculocare medical, our specialists performed web design & software engineering  services, conducted UI tests, implemented all necessary integrations to make sure that the platform would work perfectly and meet all specifications and standards.

Value Propositions for Patients

  • Easy-to-use application;
  • Screening and monitoring of eye conditions;
  • Connection to health professionals.

Value Propositions for Healthcare Professionals

  • Grounded on robust clinical studies;
  • Remote monitoring allows to free up time in clinical practice;
  • Face-to-face interactions focus on patients that want or need it;

Results

The Alleye platform has proven to be scalable during Covid-19 lockdowns. Oculocare medical could deploy the Alleye service within a few weeks in countries worldwide (e.g. the United Kingdom, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and the United States). The platform's growing impact in ophthalmology can be illustrated by the following numbers:

138% increase in tests performed compared to 2020;

> 85% of patients are correctly classified when monitoring age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema;

80% of patients getting an Alleye alarm showed signs of progression in macular disease.
